Boardgames make smiles. Smiles make friends.
1. What games do we play?
We don’t reveal the games and that’s by design. A large part of attending a Social Boardgaming event is about the social experience facilitated by the games rather than the games themselves — although, that’s not to say that we’ll throw any old thing on the table. Each game has to meet our strict criteria of a) easy to learn, b) fun to play, c) quick to play, and d) promoting player interaction. The organizers devote a significant amount of time to play-testing games before introducing them at our events and new games are continually introduced to keep things fresh. Do you want to meet fun and cool people in a low pressure, warm, and welcoming atmosphere? Do you want to have something entertaining to do together to skip the awkwardness? This is the place.
2. Are minors allowed?
No, this is an adults-only event. Children are great, but we want to cultivate an atmosphere that allows for adult conversation without the distractions that children can create.
3. What makes this boardgame meetup event different from others?
We take special care with novice gamers in mind in order to ensure a positive first experience. One of the ways in which we do this is by curating games that we feel will provide the right kind of experience for our members. Another is that we (the hosts) personally teach each game we curate, taking the necessary time everyone needs to feel comfortable and have fun.
4. Is this a singles/couples/business networking meetup?
No. We are striving for a low-pressure environment focussed simply on enjoying the company of others using boardgames as the facilitator. This is an event for anyone who wants to engage in a fun evening with other people, and learn about the joys of boardgaming.
5. Is this a fun thing to do as a couple?
Absolutely! This is a great date night activity.
6. Is this a fun thing to do if I come by myself?
Definitely! You may arrive by yourself, but you won’t feel alone while you’re here. Our hosts are ready to help you feel welcome and comfortable, so that the awkwardness that often accompanies new situations is minimized. Come and enjoy some time with other like-minded people over some good food and a few boardgames.
7. Will we be playing Sorry/Risk/Monopoly/Yahtzee?
No. We’ll be selecting from the vast pool of modern boardgames. It’s time to spread your wings!
8. Can I bring my own games?
Sorry, but no. The hosts will provide a library of curated games that support our aim of providing social gaming experiences. We want to avoid the free-for-all chaos that typically turns off novice gamers at other events. You are, however, more than welcome to offer game suggestions for us to consider for our future events. We can’t guarantee it’ll be a featured game. But if it’s a good fit, we’ll do our best!
9. What are the parking options in the downtown area?
Usually, there are two options for parking downtown —
a) Street parking: This is usually free after 6pm. Make sure to check signs! :).
b) Paid parking lots: Downtown boasts a large number of parking lots that will often charge a low flat fee ($2-$3) for evening parking.
10. How often is Dinner and a Boardgame held?
Once a month, usually on a Friday.
